A 1691 etching by Francesco Faraone Aquila after Correggio, depicting the Virgin and Child with a dedication to the critic Giovanni Pietro Bellori.
This fine etching and engraving by Francesco Faraone Aquila, dated 1691, reproduces the composition of the Madonna della Cesta, originally painted by Correggio. Aquila, a skilled printmaker active in Rome, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching to define the soft drapery of the Virgin's garments and the delicate musculature of the Christ Child. The scene depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the infant Jesus, who reaches towards her hand. A woven basket, from which the title derives, sits in the lower right foreground. In the background, a figure works at a bench, providing a sense of domestic activity that contrasts with the central devotional figures. The architectural elements, including a column and ruins, suggest a classical setting typical of the period's interpretation of biblical narratives.
The print includes a Latin dedication to Giovanni Pietro Bellori, a prominent art historian and critic of the seventeenth century. This inclusion identifies the work as a scholarly reproduction intended for a learned audience. Aquila captures the gentle, humanised interaction between mother and child that defined Correggio's style, translating the painterly sfumato of the original into the precise, linear language of the copperplate. The composition balances the foreground figures with the depth of the background, creating a harmonious arrangement that reflects the aesthetic values of the late Italian Baroque. This print offers a clear view into the methods of seventeenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the engraver acted as a bridge between the original painting and the wider dissemination of art through the medium of paper.
