A serene devotional panel from the late fifteenth-century Flemish school, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and two attendant angels.
This devotional panel, attributed to the anonymous Master of the Saint Ursula Legend, reflects the stylistic conventions of late fifteenth-century Bruges. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who sits upon a stone throne, cradling the Christ Child. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, with two angels positioned symmetrically behind the throne, their wings partially visible against the green drapery. The Virgin wears a dark blue mantle over a white gown, her expression serene and contemplative. The Christ Child holds a small white flower in one hand, while his other hand rests upon an open prayer book, a detail that introduces a narrative element of early learning and piety.
The painting exhibits the characteristic precision of the Early Netherlandish school. The artist renders the textures of the fabric, the delicate features of the figures, and the subtle play of light with meticulous care. The gold-leaf halo behind the Virgin provides a luminous backdrop, contrasting with the cooler tones of the stone architecture and the soft green of the hanging cloth. The arched top of the panel suggests its original function as a private devotional object, likely intended for a domestic setting or a small chapel.
Technically, the work demonstrates the mastery of oil glazes common to the period, allowing for a depth of colour and a smooth finish. The figures are rendered with a degree of idealism, yet they retain a tangible physical presence. The inclusion of the prayer book and the flower serves as a symbolic reference to the future passion and the purity of the figures. This work remains a representative example of the religious art produced in the Low Countries during the late Middle Ages, where the focus remained on clarity, devotion, and technical refinement.
