A 1884 Impressionist view of the Italian Riviera by Claude Monet, capturing the light and texture of the Nervia valley and the Maritime Alps.
Painted in 1884, this work captures the rugged terrain of the Italian Riviera near Bordighera. Claude Monet travelled to this region during the winter months, seeking the intense Mediterranean light that differed significantly from the atmospheric conditions of Northern France. The composition focuses on the dry, stony bed of the Nervia river in the foreground, leading the eye towards the distant, snow-capped peaks of the Maritime Alps.
Monet employs a palette dominated by cool blues, purples, and pale ochres to define the mountain slopes. The brushwork is characteristic of his mid-career style: rapid, rhythmic strokes that build form through colour rather than rigid outlines. The sky is rendered in soft, muted tones, allowing the brighter, sun-drenched summits to emerge as the primary focus. By observing the scene from a low vantage point, the artist emphasises the vast scale of the valley floor in relation to the imposing mountain range.
This piece reflects Monet's interest in the specific qualities of light at different times of day. The shadows cast across the hillsides suggest a clear, crisp morning, where the air remains cool despite the bright sun. The artist avoids excessive detail in the vegetation, opting instead for patches of colour that suggest the texture of the scrubland. This approach allows the viewer to perceive the scene as a unified optical experience. The painting remains a clear example of the artist's ability to translate the physical geography of a foreign location into a series of light-filled, painterly observations. It avoids the sentimentality often found in traditional mountain depictions, preferring a direct, honest engagement with the topography of the Italian coast.
