A detailed genre painting by Nikolai Ge depicting the arduous process of transporting marble blocks via ox-cart in the quarries of Carrara.
Nikolai Ge painted this work during his formative years in Italy, where he resided after winning a gold medal from the Imperial Academy of Arts. The composition captures the arduous labour involved in the extraction and movement of marble from the quarries of Carrara. The scene depicts a team of oxen pulling heavy blocks of stone along a rugged, sun-drenched path.
Ge focuses on the physical exertion of both the animals and the workers. The steep, jagged mountain slopes dominate the background, providing a sense of scale that dwarfs the human figures. The artist employs a palette of warm, earthy tones to convey the heat and dust of the quarry environment, while the light rakes across the stone surfaces to define their mass and texture.
Unlike his later, more psychological or religious works, this painting demonstrates an interest in the observation of daily life and industrial processes. The composition is structured to lead the eye along the path of the oxen, creating a narrative of movement through the difficult terrain. The attention to the anatomy of the oxen and the weight of the marble blocks reflects the academic training Ge received in Saint Petersburg, combined with the direct observation of the Italian landscape. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's early career, showing his technical proficiency in handling light and form before he turned his attention to the historical and moral themes that defined his later output.
