A striking diptych by Hans Baldung Grien exploring the cycle of life, mortality, and classical beauty through allegorical figures.
This diptych by Hans Baldung Grien presents a stark contrast between the inevitability of mortality and the fleeting nature of youth. The left panel, titled The Three Ages of Woman and Death, depicts a young woman, a matron, and an elderly figure alongside a skeletal personification of Death holding an hourglass. A small child rests at their feet, completing the cycle of life. The composition uses a vertical orientation to emphasise the progression from birth to decay.
The right panel, The Three Graces, offers a counterpoint. It features three figures in a more harmonious arrangement, accompanied by putti. While the figures share the elongated, mannered proportions typical of Baldung's work, the atmosphere shifts from the memento mori theme of the first panel to a more classical, albeit melancholic, representation of beauty. The artist employs a limited, warm palette to unify the two panels, though the lighting differs significantly between the stark, daylight setting of the left and the shadowed, nocturnal environment of the right.
Baldung, a student of Albrecht Dürer, often explored themes of witchcraft, death, and the supernatural. His approach to the human form is distinct, favouring sharp contours and an almost clinical observation of the body. These panels demonstrate his ability to blend traditional Christian iconography with the humanist interests of the sixteenth century. The inclusion of an owl in the left panel serves as a traditional symbol of wisdom or, in this context, a harbinger of darkness. The work remains a primary example of the Northern Renaissance fascination with the transience of earthly existence, presented with a technical precision that defines Baldung's career.
