A detailed depiction of Saint Anthony enduring a demonic assault, painted by the Sienese master Sassetta in the early fifteenth century.
This panel is a component of the altarpiece commissioned for the church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Siena. Sassetta, a leading figure of the Sienese school, depicts the ascetic saint enduring a physical assault by demonic figures. The composition is organised across a barren, rocky terrain, where the saint is shown prone on the ground, surrounded by three grotesque, hybrid creatures. These figures, rendered with a mixture of animalistic and human features, represent the psychological and physical trials faced by the hermit in the desert.
The artist employs a narrative approach common to the period, where the figures occupy a shallow, stage-like space against a backdrop of rolling hills and a distant, simplified townscape. The use of gold leaf, particularly on the wings and bodies of the demons, provides a stark contrast to the muted, earthy tones of the landscape and the dark, heavy robes of the saint. The saint's expression remains calm, suggesting his spiritual fortitude despite the chaotic nature of the scene. The linear quality of the work is precise, typical of the Sienese tradition, which prioritised decorative clarity and symbolic storytelling over the emerging naturalism found in contemporary Florentine art. The painting reflects the theological concerns of the fifteenth century, specifically the concept of the saint as a warrior against spiritual adversity. The work is now part of the collection at the Yale University Art Gallery, where it is recognised for its imaginative depiction of hagiographic themes.
