A detailed Mughal miniature from the Tuti-nama, depicting three men trapped in a cave, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a collection of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its mistress over successive nights. The scene depicts the thirty-second night, illustrating the narrative of three men who find themselves confined within a cave after a large boulder obstructs the entrance. The composition is characteristic of the Mughal school, which synthesised Persian aesthetic traditions with local Indian influences during the mid-sixteenth century.
The figures are positioned within a rocky, cavernous setting, their gestures conveying a sense of supplication and distress. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of manuscript illumination, where the geological formations are rendered as stylised, rounded shapes in shades of mauve, pink, and blue. These rocks surround the central figures, creating a sense of enclosure that mirrors the narrative tension of the story. The inclusion of delicate trees and a distant horizon line provides a contrast to the immediate confinement of the cave.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the Mughal workshop, with fine brushwork used to define the facial features and the patterns on the garments of the three men. The use of gold leaf, though subtle, adds a luminous quality to the page, a common feature in high-quality manuscript production of the period. The text above the illustration is written in Nasta'liq script, providing the necessary context for the visual narrative below. This piece is an example of the narrative-driven art produced for the imperial court, where literature and visual storytelling were closely linked. The colour palette remains balanced, utilising soft earth tones alongside more saturated pigments to guide the viewer's eye across the page. This print captures the historical detail and the specific stylistic conventions of sixteenth-century manuscript illustration, offering a window into the literary culture of the Mughal era.
