A six-panel folding screen depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji, rendered in the traditional Yamato-e style with gold leaf and mineral pigments.
This six-panel folding screen, or byōbu, depicts scenes from the classic Japanese novel, The Tale of Genji. Attributed to the Iwasa school, the work reflects the stylistic conventions of the early Edo period. The composition employs the fukinuki-yatai, or blown-off roof technique, which allows the viewer to observe the interior activities of the Heian-period court from an elevated perspective.
The narrative unfolds across a gold-leaf ground, a common feature in Japanese decorative arts of this era. The gold serves to unify the disparate scenes while providing a luminous backdrop for the figures. The figures are rendered in the hikime-kagibana style, characterised by thin lines for eyes and hooked lines for noses, which maintains a degree of anonymity and formality consistent with classical depictions of the Genji narrative.
Architectural elements, such as verandas and sliding doors, create a sense of spatial organisation. These structures are interspersed with stylised natural forms, including pine trees and rolling hills, which provide visual rhythm across the six panels. The colour palette is restrained, relying on mineral pigments to define the garments of the courtiers and the foliage. The Iwasa school, founded by Iwasa Matabei, is often associated with the transition from traditional aristocratic painting to the more genre-focused interests of the rising merchant class. This screen captures the intersection of literary tradition and the decorative requirements of the samurai and merchant residences of the seventeenth century. The work functions as both a narrative device and a structural element within a room, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the period.
