Beschreibung
A refined portrait by Leon Bakst, capturing a woman at a table in a quiet, atmospheric scene from 1902.
Leon Bakst, born Lev Samoylovich Rosenberg, is widely recognised for his contributions to the Ballets Russes, yet his earlier work demonstrates a keen interest in the social atmosphere of the fin de siècle. Painted in 1902, The Supper captures a solitary woman seated at a table, her figure rendered with a deliberate economy of line and colour. The composition relies on the stark contrast between the subject's dark, voluminous attire and the expansive, pale expanse of the tablecloth.
Bakst employs a restrained palette, allowing the black of the woman's dress and hat to anchor the visual space. The brushwork remains fluid, particularly in the treatment of the fabric and the suggestion of the table setting. The woman gazes directly toward the viewer, her expression neutral yet engaging. This work reflects the influence of contemporary European portraiture, where the focus shifted toward the psychological presence of the sitter rather than mere physical likeness. The background is kept minimal, ensuring that the viewer remains focused on the interaction between the subject and her immediate environment.
While Bakst is often associated with the theatricality of his later costume and set designs, this piece reveals his ability to work within the conventions of easel painting. The work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a suggestive quality that invites the viewer to consider the narrative behind the quiet scene. It is a study in poise and atmosphere, characteristic of the period's interest in the private lives of urban individuals. The print captures these subtle tonal transitions, preserving the original's balance of light and shadow.
