A minimalist screenprint by Jean Arp featuring nested circular forms and biomorphic shapes in a balanced, abstract composition.
Jean Arp, a founding member of the Dada movement in Zurich, maintained a lifelong interest in the organic and the biomorphic. His work often rejects rigid geometric structures in favour of forms that suggest growth, cellular division, or natural erosion. The Sun Recircled represents this mature phase of his career, where he distilled his visual language into essential, balanced shapes.
The composition features a series of nested circular forms set against a neutral grey ground. A large red ring frames a smaller yellow circle, which in turn contains a fluid, irregular shape rendered in black and light grey. These forms do not represent the sun in a literal sense, but rather evoke the cyclical nature of light and shadow through simplified, non-representational geometry. The edges of the internal shapes possess the soft, rounded quality characteristic of Arp's sculptures and collages, suggesting a tactile, physical presence despite the flatness of the print medium.
Arp often utilised chance and intuition to guide his creative process, aiming to create art that functioned like a natural object. By stripping away extraneous detail, he allowed the viewer to focus on the relationship between colour, mass, and negative space. This print demonstrates his ability to achieve visual harmony through minimal means. The interplay between the sharp, circular boundaries and the undulating, organic interior creates a tension that is both calm and precise. It is a clear example of his late-period aesthetic, where he refined his earlier, more chaotic Dadaist experiments into a coherent, meditative visual vocabulary.
