A traditional Japanese woodblock print from the Edo period, depicting figures in period attire within a narrative genre scene.
This woodblock print originates from the Edo period, a time when the Ukiyo-e genre flourished as a medium for documenting the daily lives and fashions of urban residents. Terasawa Masatsugu produced this work as part of a larger illustrated book, or ehon, which functioned as a visual guide to contemporary customs and attire. The composition is split across two pages, presenting a narrative scene of women in traditional dress, likely situated near a bridge or temple precinct, as suggested by the architectural elements in the background.
The figures are rendered with the characteristic line work of the era, where the artist employs a consistent, controlled stroke to define the folds of the kimono and the hairstyles of the subjects. The inclusion of calligraphic text within the image area is a standard feature of Japanese book illustration, integrating the written word with the visual depiction of the scene. This synthesis of text and image allowed the viewer to engage with the work as both a literary and visual object.
The print reflects the aesthetic priorities of the mid-to-late eighteenth century, focusing on the grace of the figures and the patterns of their garments. The spatial arrangement is relatively flat, prioritising the decorative quality of the scene over realistic perspective. This approach is typical of the period, where the emphasis remained on the clarity of the subject matter and the elegance of the line. As a piece of historical documentation, the print offers insight into the social codes and sartorial trends of the time, capturing a moment of leisure in a public space. The monochromatic nature of the print highlights the precision of the woodblock carving, showcasing the technical skill required to produce such detailed illustrations for mass distribution.
