A serene woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai from his Eight Views of the Ryukyu Islands series, depicting the quiet coastal scenery of Ryuto.
This woodblock print, titled The Sound of Wind in the Pines at Ryuto, belongs to the series Eight Views of the Ryukyu Islands. Katsushika Hokusai produced this set during the 1830s, a period when his interest in geography and the depiction of remote locations grew. The series draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese theme of the Eight Views, adapted here to represent the Ryukyu Kingdom, which was then a tributary state of Japan.
The composition features a series of small, rocky islands covered in pine trees, set against a calm expanse of water. Hokusai employs a restricted palette, relying on shades of blue, muted greens, and soft ochre to define the terrain. The islands are arranged to guide the eye across the frame, while the distant, simplified mountain form provides a sense of scale.
