A fifteenth-century engraving by Master ES, depicting a seated king from a series of playing cards, characterised by precise line work and heraldic detail.
This engraving belongs to the series known as The Small Playing Cards, produced by the elusive printmaker identified as Master ES. Active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century, this artist remains one of the earliest and most prolific practitioners of the copperplate engraving technique. The work displays the characteristic precision of the period, utilising fine, controlled lines to define the form of the seated monarch and the heraldic helmet floating in the upper right field.
The composition is structured with a focus on linear clarity. The king sits upon a simple bench, his posture relaxed yet formal, holding a sceptre that draws the eye upward. His robes are rendered with rhythmic, parallel hatching, a technique that provides volume to the drapery without relying on complex tonal modelling.
