A detailed Mughal miniature by Basavana depicting the siege of Arbela, featuring complex military figures and architectural elements from the Jami al-tavarikh.
This miniature painting depicts the siege of Arbela during the Mongol campaigns of Hulagu Khan. It originates from the Jami al-tavarikh, or Compendium of Chronicles, a monumental historical text commissioned by the Ilkhanid vizier Rashid al-Din. The Mughal court atelier, under the patronage of Emperor Akbar, produced this specific manuscript in the late sixteenth century. Basavana, a master painter of the imperial workshop, demonstrates his command of narrative composition and characterisation in this work.
The scene presents a fortified city wall occupying the upper portion of the frame, where defenders observe the conflict below. A rider emerges from the city gate, while the foreground is occupied by a dense assembly of soldiers, cavalry, and commanders. The artist employs a high vantage point, allowing for the clear organisation of the various military units and the chaotic energy of the engagement. The figures wear detailed armour and period-appropriate attire, reflecting the meticulous observation characteristic of the Mughal style.
Basavana uses a palette of earth tones, ochres, and muted blues, punctuated by the application of gold leaf on weaponry and decorative elements. The rocky outcrops and sparse vegetation provide a sense of place, while the vertical arrangement of the architecture creates a sense of scale. The work functions as both a historical record and a display of technical skill, typical of the collaborative projects undertaken by the royal library. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions at the base provides context for the specific event depicted, linking the visual narrative to the written history of the Mongol conquests.
