Albert Joseph Moore was a central figure in the British Aesthetic movement, known for his focus on formal harmony and decorative arrangement rather than narrative or moral instruction. In The Shulamite, completed in 1882, Moore presents a frieze-like composition of figures arranged across a shallow, architectural space. The scene draws inspiration from the Song of Solomon, yet the artist prioritises the arrangement of drapery, colour, and form over the specific biblical drama.

The figures are draped in classical garments, rendered in a palette of soft whites, creams, and warm ochres, punctuated by the striking orange of the central seated figure. Moore employs a horizontal structure, echoing the relief sculptures of antiquity. The background features marble panelling and gridded window screens, which flatten the pictorial space and emphasise the decorative quality of the composition. Each figure is positioned to balance the others, creating a sense of rhythmic order.

Moore was meticulous in his preparation, often creating numerous studies for the folds of fabric and the positioning of limbs.
