Georges Seurat painted The Seine at La Grande Jatte in the Spring in 1888, during the height of his exploration into optical science and colour theory. This work depicts the banks of the Seine, a location he frequented during his career. Unlike his earlier, more rigid compositions, this piece displays a softer application of his signature technique, pointillism. Small, distinct dots of colour are applied to the canvas, intended to blend in the eye of the viewer rather than on the palette.
