Paul Signac produced this work during his early period of experimentation with the Neo-Impressionist technique. The painting depicts a calm stretch of the Seine at Herblay, a commune located to the north-west of Paris. Signac, alongside Georges Seurat, developed the method of applying small, distinct dots of colour to the canvas. This approach relies on the viewer's eye to blend the pigments optically, rather than mixing them on the palette.

The composition is defined by a horizontal emphasis, with the river occupying the lower half of the frame and reflecting the sky above. The trees on the right bank and the distant village silhouette provide structural balance to the scene. Signac uses a palette dominated by soft lilacs, pale blues, and muted greens to capture the atmospheric quality of the light. The water surface displays his methodical application of paint, where short, rhythmic strokes suggest the gentle movement of the current.

Unlike the earlier Impressionists who sought to capture fleeting moments through rapid brushwork, Signac and his contemporaries pursued a more scientific and calculated application of colour theory. This work demonstrates his focus on the interaction of complementary hues to achieve luminosity.
