A 1910 oil painting by Gustav Klimt, capturing the Schloss Kammer on Lake Attersee through a mosaic of stippled brushstrokes and shimmering reflections.
Painted in 1910, this work depicts the Schloss Kammer, a castle situated on the shores of Lake Attersee in Upper Austria. Gustav Klimt spent many summers in this region, finding a retreat from the urban environment of Vienna. During these periods, he produced a series of works focusing on the architecture and the surrounding natural environment of the lake.
The composition is notable for its flattened perspective, which pushes the architecture of the castle into the background, almost merging it with the dense foliage of the trees. The structure of the building is rendered in pale, muted yellows, contrasting with the terracotta tones of the roof. The trees are depicted through a mosaic of small, stippled brushstrokes, creating a textured surface that obscures the distinction between individual leaves and branches. This technique reflects an interest in pointillist methods, though applied with a looser, more expressive hand.
The lower portion of the canvas is occupied by the surface of the lake, which acts as a mirror for the scene above. Klimt uses a similar palette of greens, blues, and yellows to represent the water, creating a rhythmic, shimmering effect that suggests movement and light. The reflection is not a precise duplication of the castle, but rather an abstract interpretation of colour and form. By removing the horizon line, Klimt creates a sense of enclosure, drawing the viewer into the quiet atmosphere of the lakeside setting. The work avoids traditional depth, favouring a decorative, surface-oriented approach that characterises much of his later output. It remains a study of light, colour, and the interplay between man-made structures and the natural world.
