A quintessential fête galante by Antoine Watteau, depicting a couple sharing a musical moment in a secluded, atmospheric woodland setting.
Antoine Watteau, a master of the French Rococo, painted The Scale of Love around 1717. This work belongs to the genre known as the fête galante, a category created by the Académie Royale to describe scenes of courtship and leisure set within park-like surroundings. The composition features a central male figure playing a guitar, accompanied by a woman who holds a sheet of music. Their interaction is quiet and focused, suggesting a moment of shared intimacy.
Behind the pair, a stone bust of a satyr or faun peers out from the foliage, a common motif in Watteau's work that introduces a subtle element of classical mythology or earthy humour to the scene. The background dissolves into a soft, atmospheric woodland, typical of the artist's approach to creating a dreamlike, theatrical space. The figures are dressed in the fashionable attire of the early eighteenth century, with the man wearing a pink doublet and the woman in a warm, ochre-toned gown.
Watteau employs a delicate, painterly technique, using light brushwork to capture the texture of fabrics and the dappled quality of light filtering through the trees. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, soft pinks, and warm browns, which contribute to the gentle, melancholic mood of the piece. Unlike the rigid formality of earlier court portraiture, this work captures a fleeting, private exchange. The arrangement of the figures, seated low to the ground, draws the viewer into their immediate circle, creating a sense of proximity to the subjects. The National Gallery in London holds this painting, where it remains a representative example of Watteau's ability to blend observation with poetic invention.
