A six-panel screen painting by Kano Mitsunobu depicting the legendary Four Graybeards of Mount Shang against a gold-leaf background.
This work by Kano Mitsunobu represents the aesthetic shift during the Momoyama period, where the Kano school produced large-scale screen paintings for the residences of the military elite. The composition utilises a gold-leaf ground, a technique designed to reflect light within dimly lit castle interiors. This specific screen depicts the Four Graybeards of Mount Shang, a group of legendary recluses who famously refused imperial service, only to return to court later in life to advise the emperor.
The figures are rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, characteristic of the Kano style. Their robes are painted in muted tones, providing a contrast against the metallic surface. The surrounding environment, featuring stylised pine trees and rocky outcrops, follows the conventions of Chinese-inspired ink painting, yet adapts these motifs to the decorative requirements of Japanese architecture. The spatial arrangement is deliberately flattened, prioritising the rhythmic placement of figures across the six panels.
Kano Mitsunobu, the son of the influential Kano Eitoku, maintained the family tradition while refining the brushwork to a more delicate, linear quality. The screen demonstrates the balance between narrative clarity and decorative surface design. The use of gold leaf creates a sense of luxury, while the subject matter reflects the Confucian values often associated with the scholarly class in Japan. This piece is an example of the transition from the bold, monumental style of the late sixteenth century to the more refined, orderly compositions that would dominate the early Edo period. The work remains a primary example of the Kano school's ability to integrate classical Chinese themes into the visual language of the Japanese ruling class.
