A detailed religious scene by Johann König, capturing the Resurrection of Christ with Mannerist precision and dramatic lighting.
Johann König, a German painter active during the early seventeenth century, demonstrates his technical precision in this depiction of the Resurrection. Painted on copper, a medium favoured by Northern European artists for its smooth surface and ability to hold fine detail, the work exhibits the stylistic hallmarks of the late Mannerist period. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the celestial realm above, where Christ ascends amidst clouds and putti, and the terrestrial space below, occupied by the startled Roman guards.
König employs a sophisticated colour palette, contrasting the ethereal, luminous tones surrounding the figure of Christ with the grounded, earthy hues of the soldiers. The figures are arranged in a dynamic, somewhat crowded fashion, typical of the period's preference for complex spatial relationships. The guards are shown in various states of disarray and slumber, their armour and garments rendered with careful attention to texture and light. Through the arched opening in the background, a distant cityscape is visible under a twilight sky, providing a sense of depth that balances the activity in the foreground.
This work reflects the influence of Adam Elsheimer, with whom König had contact during his time in Rome. The small-scale, cabinet-sized nature of the painting allows for a high degree of finish, inviting close inspection of the individual expressions and the play of light across the metallic surfaces of the soldiers' equipment. The dramatic lighting, particularly the radiance emanating from the central figure, creates a clear narrative focus while maintaining the stylistic artifice characteristic of the era. This print captures the luminosity and precise brushwork of the original, offering a clear view of the artist's command over both human anatomy and atmospheric perspective.
