A dramatic Baroque allegory by Claude Guy Hallé, depicting the re-establishment of Catholic authority in Strasbourg through symbolic figures and theatrical lighting.
Claude Guy Hallé, a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, produced this allegorical work to commemorate the political and religious shifts in Strasbourg during the late seventeenth century. The composition functions as a piece of state propaganda, aligning the interests of the French monarchy with the re-establishment of Catholic authority in the region.
At the centre of the scene, a female figure draped in orange and white robes holds a book, representing the Church or Faith. She is accompanied by a figure in Roman-style military attire, often interpreted as a personification of Louis XIV or the French state, who gestures towards the cross. The lighting is theatrical, typical of the Baroque period, with a divine glow emanating from behind the cross, illuminating the central figures while casting the lower foreground into shadow. In the lower left, a demonic, winged creature is cast down, symbolising the defeat of heresy or opposition to the state-sanctioned religion. Above, an angel sounds a trumpet, announcing the event, while another figure crowns the central participants with a laurel wreath.
Hallé employs a structured, pyramidal composition to guide the viewer's eye through the narrative. The use of colour is deliberate: the saturated red of the military figure's cloak and the bright orange of the central female figure create a visual anchor against the cooler, darker tones of the background architecture and the defeated figure. The work reflects the formal training of the French Academy, prioritising clear narrative legibility and classical proportions. This print captures the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, preserving the painterly textures of the original oil on canvas. It provides a window into the visual language used by the French court to project power and religious orthodoxy during the reign of the Sun King.
