Eustache Le Sueur, a founding member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, produced this work during the mid-seventeenth century. The painting depicts a dramatic biblical narrative from the Second Book of Samuel, concerning the assault of Tamar by her half-brother, Amnon. Le Sueur employs a theatrical composition, typical of the French Baroque tradition, to convey the tension of the encounter.

Amnon is shown in a forceful posture, his form partially draped in white and blue fabric, while Tamar recoils, her expression conveying shock and resistance.
