A dramatic Mannerist woodcut by Giuseppe Scolari depicting the abduction of Proserpina by Pluto in a dynamic, high-energy composition.
This woodcut by Giuseppe Scolari depicts the classical myth of the abduction of Proserpina by Pluto. Scolari, an Italian artist active in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, demonstrates the dramatic energy characteristic of the Mannerist period. The composition is filled with movement, as Pluto drives his chariot through the earth, his horses straining forward while Proserpina is held in his grasp.
The technical execution of the woodcut reveals Scolari's skill in handling the medium. He employs varied line weights to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the horses' manes. The clouds and the ground are rendered with rhythmic, hatched lines that create a sense of atmospheric turbulence. The figures are elongated and twisted, a stylistic choice that heightens the emotional tension of the scene.
Scolari was known for his large-scale woodcuts, which often featured complex compositions and theatrical lighting effects. This work is a clear example of his ability to translate the painterly qualities of the era into the graphic medium. The dynamic posture of the horses and the sweeping gestures of the deities create a sense of urgency. The print captures the moment of transition between the terrestrial world and the underworld, with the horses emerging from the earth itself. The work remains a significant example of Italian printmaking from the turn of the seventeenth century, reflecting the period's interest in classical themes and expressive, non-naturalistic form.
