A classical Renaissance engraving by Benedetto Montagna depicting the mythological scene of Europa and the bull.
This engraving by Benedetto Montagna depicts the classical myth of Europa, who is shown seated upon the back of a bull, the disguised form of Zeus. Montagna, a printmaker and painter active in Vicenza, demonstrates the technical characteristics of early sixteenth-century Italian engraving. The composition is structured with a clear foreground, where the central figures interact, and a distant, fortified coastal setting that provides a sense of spatial depth.
Europa is shown placing a wreath upon the bull, while a companion figure stands nearby, observing the scene. The figures are rendered with the distinct linear style typical of Montagna, who often employed firm, clear outlines and systematic hatching to define form and shadow. The artist's signature is visible in the upper portion of the print, a common practice for printmakers of the period to establish authorship and protect their work from unauthorised copying.
The background features a castle and rocky outcrops, elements that reflect the influence of Northern European printmaking, particularly the works of Albrecht Dürer, which circulated widely in Italy during this time. Montagna synthesises these Northern stylistic tendencies with the humanistic subject matter favoured by Italian artists of the Renaissance. The print serves as an example of how classical narratives were disseminated through the medium of engraving, allowing collectors and artists to study mythological themes outside of large-scale painting or sculpture. The monochromatic nature of the engraving focuses the viewer on the narrative action and the precise, controlled line work that defines the figures and the surrounding environment.
