This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the mythological transformation of Caenis, a narrative drawn from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Tempesta, a Florentine artist active in Rome, produced a large body of work illustrating classical myths, often characterised by his energetic line work and mastery of the etching medium. In this composition, Neptune is shown with Caenis on a shoreline, while his sea-horses wait in the surf nearby. The artist employs a clear, narrative style, typical of his illustrative series, which were widely circulated across Europe during the early seventeenth century.
The visual language of the print relies on precise hatching to define form and shadow. Tempesta captures the movement of the figures and the turbulent water with rhythmic, calligraphic strokes. The background features a distant coastal fortification, providing a sense of place to the mythological encounter.
