This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuninaga belongs to the genre of uki-e, or perspective pictures, which gained popularity in late eighteenth-century Japan. These works demonstrate the fascination Japanese artists held for Western linear perspective, a technique introduced through imported Dutch copperplate engravings. The composition employs a structured, receding view to depict the pyramids, though the rendering of the structures and the figures reflects a distinctively Japanese interpretation of foreign subjects.
The scene features figures dressed in European-style attire, complete with ruffs and coats, positioned before large, geometric pyramid forms. A prominent pine tree occupies the foreground, providing a visual anchor that contrasts with the exotic, distant architecture. The print is part of the series Newly Published Dutch Perspective Prints (Shinpan Oranda uki-e), which sought to satisfy the curiosity of the Edo public regarding distant lands.
