A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Philips Galle depicting the construction of the Pyramids of Egypt, based on designs by Maarten van Heemskerck.
This engraving by Philips Galle, titled The Pyramids of Egypt, forms part of a series depicting the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Based on designs by the painter Maarten van Heemskerck, the work reflects the sixteenth-century European fascination with classical antiquity and biblical geography. The composition is structured around a central pyramid, flanked by obelisks and a smoking furnace, which suggests the industrial labour required for such monumental construction.
In the foreground, a crowned figure, likely representing a pharaoh or an allegorical personification of Egypt, gestures toward the construction site. His presence provides a sense of scale and narrative authority. The scene is populated by labourers engaged in various tasks, from digging to transporting materials, which imbues the print with a sense of activity. An eagle carrying a scroll flies in the upper left, adding a layer of symbolic or mythological weight to the scene.
The engraving technique employed by Galle is precise, using fine lines to define the textures of stone, smoke, and human anatomy. The perspective is somewhat flattened, typical of the period, which allows for the inclusion of multiple architectural elements within a single frame. Latin inscriptions at the base provide context, identifying the location as Memphis and referencing the historical significance of these structures. This print serves as a record of how Renaissance artists interpreted the ancient world, blending archaeological interest with imaginative reconstruction. The work is a fine example of the printmaking tradition in the Low Countries, where the collaboration between designers and engravers was common practice for disseminating classical knowledge to a wider audience.
