A dramatic Mannerist depiction of the biblical healing of Naaman by the prophet Elisha, rendered with the characteristic theatricality of Giorgio Vasari.
Giorgio Vasari, a central figure in the development of art history and a prolific painter of the Italian Renaissance, produced this work during the height of the Mannerist period. The composition depicts the biblical narrative of the prophet Elisha instructing Naaman the Syrian to wash in the Jordan River to cure his leprosy. Vasari employs the characteristic stylistic markers of his time, including elongated figures, complex spatial arrangements, and a sophisticated use of light to guide the viewer through the scene.
The foreground is occupied by the primary interaction between Elisha and the kneeling Naaman. Vasari uses gesture and posture to communicate the gravity of the encounter. The figures are arranged in a dense, theatrical grouping that draws the eye across the canvas. Behind them, a secondary scene unfolds on a raised platform, where other figures gather, adding depth to the narrative. The colour palette relies on deep, saturated tones, with contrasting drapery that creates a sense of movement and drama. The lighting is artificial and directional, typical of the period, which serves to define the muscularity of the figures and the texture of the garments.
Vasari was known for his technical proficiency and his ability to manage large-scale compositions. This work demonstrates his command of human anatomy and his interest in the dramatic potential of religious subjects. The architectural elements in the background provide a sense of scale, grounding the figures within a constructed environment. As a practitioner of the Mannerist style, Vasari prioritised artistic artifice and emotional intensity over the balanced proportions of the earlier High Renaissance. This print captures the tension and the narrative clarity of the original painting, offering a view into the stylistic priorities of sixteenth-century Italian art.
