A detailed 17th-century etching depicting the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son, capturing a scene of revelry and moral warning.
This etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher (II) depicts the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son, specifically the moment of his profligate living. The scene is set within a garden pavilion where a group of figures in early 17th-century Dutch attire engage in revelry. The central figure, dressed in fine clothing, dances with a partner, while others sit at a table laden with food and drink. A musician plays a lute, and a dog rests near the table, where playing cards are scattered on the ground, symbolising the dissipation of wealth.
In the background, the narrative continues with a secondary scene showing the son being driven out of a tavern by women, suggesting the inevitable consequences of his actions. The composition is dense, typical of the period, with figures arranged across the foreground and mid-ground. The artist employs fine hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the clothing, the foliage of the arbour, and the architectural elements of the tavern. The Latin inscription at the bottom provides a moralising commentary on the scene, warning against the dangers of youthful excess and the squandering of one's fortune.
Visscher was a prominent publisher and printmaker in Amsterdam, and his work often reflected the moral concerns of the Dutch public. This print serves as a visual sermon, using the familiar narrative of the Prodigal Son to address themes of vice, temptation, and social conduct. The attention to detail in the costumes and the domestic setting provides insight into the social life of the era, while the clear moral message aligns with the didactic nature of much Dutch art from the early 17th century. The print is a fine example of the technical skill involved in Dutch printmaking during this period, demonstrating a mastery of line and narrative structure.
