A detailed 16th-century engraving by Chrispijn van den Broeck depicting the departure of the Prodigal Son from his family home.
This engraving depicts the departure of the Prodigal Son, a narrative drawn from the Gospel of Luke. Chrispijn van den Broeck, a Flemish artist active in Antwerp, captures the moment the young man prepares to leave his family home. The composition is structured around the central figure of the son, who is mounted on a horse, reaching out to his father. The father, leaning on a staff, appears to offer a final gesture of farewell. To the right, family members observe the scene with expressions of sorrow, while a woman sits in the foreground nursing a child, adding a domestic dimension to the biblical account.
The work exhibits characteristics typical of Northern Mannerism. The figures possess elongated proportions and expressive, somewhat theatrical gestures. The background features architectural elements and a distant landscape, providing a sense of depth that contrasts with the crowded foreground. The engraving technique employs fine lines to define the textures of clothing, the musculature of the horses, and the varied expressions of the onlookers. The Latin inscription at the base provides the scriptural context for the scene, a common practice in printmaking of the period to guide the viewer through the moral lesson of the parable.
Van den Broeck was a versatile artist, known for his work in painting, architecture, and print design. His prints were often disseminated through the publishing houses of Antwerp, such as that of Gerard de Jode, whose name appears on the plate. This print reflects the technical precision of the period, where the engraver sought to balance narrative clarity with stylistic sophistication. The scene functions as a visual meditation on themes of departure, familial duty, and the inevitable consequences of human choice, presented through the lens of sixteenth-century European artistic conventions.
