A detailed etching by Peter Moran depicting a herd of cattle drinking at a secluded pool, rendered with fine line work and atmospheric shading.
Peter Moran was a member of a prominent family of artists, known for his technical mastery of etching and his focus on rural subjects. This work, The Pool, demonstrates his ability to capture the quiet atmosphere of the American countryside. The composition centres on a small herd of cattle gathering at the water's edge, a recurring theme in his oeuvre that reflects his interest in animal studies and rural life.
Technically, the etching employs a variety of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to define the textures of the foliage and the animals. The dense, shadowed woods in the background provide a contrast to the reflective surface of the water, where the cattle are depicted drinking. Moran uses the medium to create a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground pool into the shaded thicket beyond. The presence of a small figure in the distance adds a sense of scale and human activity to the otherwise secluded scene.
Moran's approach to printmaking was influenced by the Barbizon School, which favoured naturalistic depictions of rural settings. His work often avoids the dramatic or the overly sentimental, opting instead for a direct observation of the environment. The fine lines of the etching process allow for a high degree of detail in the cattle's forms and the surrounding vegetation, creating a balanced image that remains grounded in observation. This print offers a view into the late 19th-century American interest in pastoral scenes, rendered with the precision and patience characteristic of Moran's graphic work.
