Beschreibung
A view of the agricultural fields of Gennevilliers, painted by Gustave Caillebotte in 1888, capturing the light and structure of the French countryside.
Gustave Caillebotte painted this view of the Gennevilliers plain in 1888. During this period, the artist spent significant time in the Petit-Gennevilliers area, where he pursued his interests in boating and gardening. The composition captures the agricultural expanse viewed from an elevated position in Argenteuil, looking across the Seine.
The work demonstrates the Impressionist interest in light and atmospheric conditions. The sky is rendered in a pale, uniform yellow, suggesting a warm, hazy day. Below, the fields are divided into distinct, rectangular strips of varying colours, reflecting the crop patterns of the region. Caillebotte employs a structured approach to the scene, using the horizontal bands of the river and the distant hills to organise the space. The brushwork is visible and direct, characteristic of his later style, which moved away from the precise realism of his earlier urban subjects towards a more fluid, painterly technique.
Small, vertical accents, such as the poplars, provide a rhythmic contrast to the horizontal orientation of the fields. A single small boat is visible on the river, serving as a minor point of interest within the broader view. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, including ochre, muted greens, and soft purples, which unify the composition. This painting reflects the artist's engagement with the changing rural environment on the outskirts of Paris, documenting the intersection of traditional farming and the encroaching influence of suburban development. It remains a clear example of his ability to balance objective observation with a personal, painterly response to the French countryside.
