The Parrot Addresses Khujasta at the Beginning of the Twelfth Night - Tara 1

This illustration originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a significant manuscript commissioned during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The narrative follows a parrot who recounts stories to his owner, Khujasta, to prevent her from leaving her home while her husband is away on business. This specific folio depicts the parrot within its cage, positioned on a terrace, as it engages in dialogue with the woman.

The visual composition follows the conventions of mid-sixteenth-century Mughal painting. The scene is divided into distinct zones: the architectural elements of the palace, the courtyard, and the surrounding garden. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, where the interior and exterior spaces are presented simultaneously to clarify the narrative action. The woman, Khujasta, is shown in a gesture of address, her figure rendered with the fluid lines and soft modelling characteristic of the workshop style associated with the artist known as Tara 1.

The palette is composed of mineral pigments, including vermilion, lapis lazuli, and ochre, applied with precision to define the architectural details and the patterned textiles. Gold leaf is used sparingly to add texture to the cage and the woman's jewellery. The surrounding Persian calligraphy, written in Nasta'liq script, frames the image, integrating the text and the visual narrative into a unified page. This work reflects the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions and the emerging aesthetic sensibilities of the Mughal court. The attention to detail in the brickwork, the floral motifs on the lower wall, and the foliage of the tree provides a sense of place, while the interaction between the human figure and the avian narrator remains the primary focus of the composition.
