Domenico Fetti, a Roman painter active in Mantua, produced this work as part of a series depicting the parables of Christ. The composition illustrates the biblical passage from the Gospel of Matthew, where a man is cautioned against judging the minor faults of others while ignoring his own significant failings. Fetti employs a direct, almost theatrical approach to the subject, placing the figures within a ruined architectural setting that frames the interaction.

The artist uses a loose, painterly technique that reflects the influence of Venetian masters such as Titian and Veronese.
