A depiction of the artist carrying his equipment on the road to Tarascon, rendered in the distinct, rhythmic brushwork of Van Gogh's Arles period.
Painted in 1888 during his time in Arles, this work depicts Vincent van Gogh as he travels to his painting site. The artist carries his easel, canvas, and painting supplies on his back, his figure cast in a long, dark shadow against the sun-drenched road. The composition is defined by the contrast between the figure and the expansive, flat fields of the Provençal countryside.
Van Gogh employed a deliberate, rhythmic application of paint, using short, thick strokes that define the texture of the road and the surrounding foliage. The palette is dominated by the warm ochres of the wheat fields and the cool, pale blue of the sky, creating a sense of the intense heat typical of the southern French summer. The figure of the artist is rendered with a directness that reflects his focus on the act of painting itself, rather than a formal portrait.
This work was formerly held in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum in Magdeburg before its destruction during the Second World War. It remains known through high-quality photographic records and studies of the artist's correspondence from the period. The painting captures a specific moment in the artist's daily routine, documenting the physical reality of his practice. The heavy, dark shadow stretching across the foreground serves as a visual anchor, grounding the figure within the space. The trees frame the scene, leading the eye toward the distant horizon where the town of Tarascon is suggested. This piece provides insight into the artist's life in Arles, where he sought to capture the light and colour of the region with a new, personal intensity.
