A woodblock print from the 1804 Nantei Picture Album, featuring calligraphic depictions of figures fishing in the distinct style of the Shijo school.
This woodblock print originates from the Supplementary Volume of the Nantei Picture Album (Nantei gafu kōhen), published in 1804. Nishimura Nantei, a Kyoto-based artist associated with the Shijo school, produced this collection to demonstrate his mastery of brushwork and observation. The Shijo school favoured a naturalistic approach, often focusing on the daily activities of common people and the subtle movements of the natural world.
The composition depicts figures engaged in fishing, rendered with a calligraphic economy of line. Nantei avoids heavy shading or complex textures, relying instead on the expressive potential of the ink stroke to define form and motion. The figures are captured in mid-action, their postures suggesting the physical effort of their task. The background remains largely empty, a characteristic choice that directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the individuals and their tools. This minimalist aesthetic reflects the broader artistic values of the period, where the skill of the artist is measured by the ability to convey a scene with minimal intervention.
As a piece of printed ephemera from the early 19th century, this work provides a glimpse into the graphic traditions of Kyoto. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where the carver has faithfully translated the fluid, spontaneous quality of Nantei's original brush drawings. The paper tone and the stark contrast of the black ink create a balanced visual experience, suitable for those who appreciate the historical development of Japanese printmaking and the specific stylistic contributions of the Shijo school. This print is an example of the instructional and aesthetic albums that circulated among artists and collectors during the Edo period, serving as both a reference for technique and a source of visual pleasure.
