A classic woodcut depicting the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, based on a design by the Venetian master Titian.
This woodcut depicts the devotional subject of the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine. The composition centres on the Christ Child, who places a ring upon the finger of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The Virgin Mary supports the child, while Saint Joseph observes from the background. An angel is positioned to the left, completing the group. The figures are rendered with the characteristic weight and volume associated with the Venetian school of the sixteenth century.
The print reflects the collaborative nature of printmaking during this period. While the design is attributed to Titian, the execution of the woodblock was likely carried out by a professional cutter, such as Niccolò Boldrini. The lines are bold and expressive, capturing the sculptural quality of the figures through varied hatching techniques. The drapery folds are particularly well-defined, creating a sense of physical presence within the shallow pictorial space.
This work belongs to a tradition of religious imagery intended for private contemplation. The scene is domestic in its arrangement, yet it conveys a theological narrative through gesture and gaze. The interaction between the figures is quiet and measured, avoiding excessive drama in favour of a balanced, harmonious arrangement. The woodcut medium allows for a stark, graphic clarity that emphasises the contours of the figures against the background. It remains a representative example of how Titian's painterly compositions were translated into the graphic arts, allowing his visual language to reach a wider audience beyond the patrons of his oil paintings. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of the Venetian woodcut tradition, where the interplay of light and shadow is achieved through the density and direction of the carved lines.
