A woodblock print from the instructional manual Unpitsu soga, demonstrating the gestural brushwork and ink techniques of the Edo period.
This woodblock print originates from the instructional manual Unpitsu soga, or The Moving Brush in Rough Painting, authored by the Osaka-based artist Tachibana Morikuni. Published posthumously in 1749, the work serves as a guide for students of the Kano school, demonstrating the economy of line and brushwork characteristic of the period. Morikuni was a prolific illustrator, known for his ability to translate complex painting techniques into accessible printed formats for a wider audience.
The composition displays the characteristic contrast between the foreground and background elements. On the left, a gnarled, dark branch is rendered with bold, gestural ink strokes, suggesting the rough texture of bark and the organic growth of a plum tree. The right side features a more ethereal, ghost-like figure of a scholar or poet, depicted with faint, delicate lines that recede into the paper. This juxtaposition illustrates the concept of 'rough' painting, where the artist balances heavy, saturated ink application with lighter, suggestive washes.
The inclusion of calligraphic text alongside the imagery provides context, linking the visual elements to classical themes of poetry and nature. The print reflects the pedagogical approach of the eighteenth century, where the mastery of brush control was considered essential for any aspiring artist. By simplifying the visual language, Morikuni allows the viewer to observe the trajectory of the brush, from the initial heavy application of ink to the subtle, fading marks that define the secondary figures. This piece is a representative example of the instructional literature that circulated during the Edo period, documenting the technical standards of the time while maintaining an aesthetic focus on simplicity and balance.
