This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, titled The Moon over Gojo Bridge, originates from the series Heroes for the Snow, Moon, and Flowers (Buyu setsugekka), published in 1886. Yoshitoshi, a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, produced this work during a time of significant transition in Japanese art. The composition depicts a dramatic scene from folklore, capturing a moment of tension and movement as a figure carries another across a river. The water is rendered with stylised, swirling lines that suggest a strong current, while the figures are dressed in patterned garments that demonstrate the artist's attention to textile detail.
The print exhibits the characteristic aesthetic of the Meiji era, incorporating Western-influenced colour palettes alongside traditional Japanese woodblock techniques. The sky transitions from a pale blue to a warm orange at the horizon, providing a backdrop for the figures and the overhanging branches. Yoshitoshi was known for his ability to infuse his prints with psychological depth and narrative energy, often moving away from the static poses found in earlier ukiyo-e works. The inclusion of birds in flight adds a sense of immediacy to the scene, reinforcing the narrative quality of the composition.
