Nicolas Poussin, a central figure of the French Baroque, produced this work during his early years in Rome. The composition focuses on a single, brutal encounter: a soldier, his muscular form tensed, prepares to strike while a mother desperately attempts to shield her child. The scene is stripped of extraneous detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the raw physical struggle and the emotional intensity of the figures.
Poussin employs a clear, structured arrangement of forms. The soldier, the mother, and the child create a triangular configuration that anchors the action. His use of colour is deliberate, with the soldier's red cloak providing a sharp contrast against the cooler tones of the background architecture and the sky. The lighting is theatrical, casting deep shadows that define the musculature of the figures and the folds of their garments.
