Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem was a central figure in the Haarlem Academy, a group that promoted the study of the human form through the lens of Italian Mannerism. This work, painted in 1590, demonstrates the artist's preoccupation with complex anatomical poses and the dramatic tension inherent in large-scale history painting. The composition is crowded with figures, each contorted in ways that emphasise muscularity and physical exertion.

The scene depicts the biblical narrative of the Massacre of the Innocents. Van Haarlem organises the chaos through a series of interlocking bodies, creating a sense of movement that draws the eye across the canvas. The foreground features figures in extreme foreshortening, a technique favoured by Mannerist painters to display technical skill. The background shows a fortified city, rendered with a cooler palette that contrasts with the warmer, flesh-toned figures in the foreground.

Van Haarlem employs a high-contrast lighting scheme to model the musculature of the soldiers and the desperate forms of the mothers. The painting avoids a singular focus, instead offering a panoramic view of the conflict. The figures are not depicted in a naturalistic manner but are instead stylised to fit the aesthetic requirements of the period, which prioritised the display of artistic virtuosity over emotional restraint. The work remains a primary example of the Dutch Mannerist style, reflecting the influence of artists such as Bartholomeus Spranger and Hendrick Goltzius on the artistic output of the late sixteenth-century Netherlands.
