Titian painted this monumental work for the Gesuiti Church in Venice. It depicts the final moments of Saint Lawrence, who was condemned to death by fire on a gridiron. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the lower section, the physical act of martyrdom unfolds with dramatic tension. The figures are arranged in a chaotic, dynamic cluster, illuminated by the flickering flames of the pyre and the torches held by the Roman soldiers. The artist employs a dark, moody palette, which allows the light sources to create sharp contrasts and define the musculature of the figures.

Above the scene of suffering, the upper portion of the canvas opens into a celestial space. A break in the clouds reveals a divine light, which reaches down towards the saint. This visual separation between the earthly agony and the heavenly promise is a hallmark of the artist's mature style. The architectural setting, featuring classical columns and a statue in the background, provides a sense of scale and historical context. The brushwork is loose and expressive, a technique the artist developed later in his career to suggest form through colour and light rather than rigid outlines.

This painting demonstrates the artist's mastery of nocturnal scenes and his ability to manage complex, multi-figure compositions.
