A fine engraving by Master E.S. depicting the letter Y formed by the narrative of Saint George and the Dragon.
This engraving by the elusive Master E.S. forms part of a series of ornamental alphabet letters. The artist, active in the Upper Rhine region during the mid-fifteenth century, remains one of the most significant figures in the early history of European printmaking. His work displays a mastery of the burin, allowing for precise, descriptive lines that define both the figures and the structural form of the letter itself.
The composition depicts the letter Y, ingeniously constructed from the narrative of Saint George and the Dragon. On the left, the saint is shown in full plate armour, his lance piercing the beast beneath his feet. The right side of the letter is formed by the figure of the princess, who stands in prayer. Above her, a small figure of the Christ Child is positioned, adding a layer of devotional iconography to the secular form of the alphabet. The integration of narrative scenes into letterforms was a common practice in medieval manuscript illumination, yet Master E.S. translates this tradition into the medium of metal engraving with exceptional technical control.
The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative requirements with figurative clarity. The drapery of the princess's gown and the articulated plates of the saint's armour are rendered with fine, parallel hatching, a technique that provides volume and texture to the figures. This work provides a window into the transition from late Gothic manuscript traditions to the burgeoning print culture of the Renaissance. The clarity of the line work and the imaginative use of space within the letterform reflect the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Master E.S. workshop.
