A detailed depiction of the climactic moment from Tennyson's poem, where the Lady of Shalott turns to look at Sir Lancelot, triggering her curse.
William Holman Hunt began this composition in 1886, completing it nearly two decades later in 1905. It depicts the climactic moment from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem of the same name. The Lady of Shalott, cursed to view the world only through a mirror, turns to look directly at Sir Lancelot as he rides towards Camelot. This action triggers the curse, causing her loom to break and the threads to entangle her.
Hunt fills the frame with symbolic detail. The circular mirror reflects the scene outside, showing the bridge and the rider, while the surrounding walls are decorated with scenes from the life of Christ and the Fall of Man. These motifs suggest the Lady's isolation and her eventual sacrifice. Her hair, caught in a wild, static charge, signifies the supernatural power of the curse. The room is cluttered with the tools of her trade, including the loom and various spools of thread, rendered with the sharp focus characteristic of the Pre-Raphaelite style.
The artist spent years refining the composition, often consulting with Tennyson regarding the poem's imagery. The painting is notable for its intense colour palette and the juxtaposition of the domestic interior with the distant, sunlit world visible through the mirror. Hunt was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and this work represents his return to the themes of medieval romance and moral allegory that defined his early career. The physical tension in the figure of the Lady, combined with the chaotic web of threads, captures the precise instant of her doom. It remains a significant example of late Victorian narrative painting, demonstrating the artist's dedication to technical precision and symbolic density.
