Beschreibung
A detailed seventeenth-century Flemish genre painting depicting a busy kitchen interior. The scene features a woman preparing food surrounded by game, fish, and a large swan pie.
David Teniers the Younger was a prolific Flemish artist known for his depictions of peasant life and domestic interiors. This work, painted during the mid-seventeenth century, depicts a large kitchen filled with an array of foodstuffs and household figures. The composition is divided between the immediate foreground and a recessed cooking area in the background.
In the centre, a seated woman in a bright red skirt prepares food while a young boy stands beside her holding a plate. To their left, a table holds a large swan pie, a luxury dish often served at aristocratic banquets. Below this, various game animals including a hare and several birds are laid out on a wooden bench. The floor is scattered with fish, copper vessels, and a small spaniel, which adds a sense of lived-in domesticity to the scene. Teniers includes a variety of textures, from the metallic sheen of the pots to the soft plumage of the birds.
The background reveals the scale of the operation, with several cooks working before a massive open hearth. One figure tends to a spit while another prepares ingredients at a side table. Teniers uses a palette of earthy browns and ochres, contrasted by the primary red of the woman's clothing. His technique involves precise brushwork to describe the different surfaces of fur, feathers, and scales.
This painting is characteristic of the Flemish tradition of combining genre scenes with still life elements. It provides a detailed look at the culinary preparations of a wealthy household during the Baroque period. Teniers was highly successful in his lifetime, serving as the court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. His ability to organise complex scenes with numerous objects made his work popular among collectors across Europe.
