A study of the biblical Judgement of Solomon by Dutch Mannerist painter Anthonie Blocklandt, rendered in pen and ink with grey wash.
This drawing depicts the biblical narrative of the Judgement of Solomon, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Northern Renaissance and Mannerist periods. Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort, a painter from Montfoort, demonstrates his command of composition through the arrangement of figures within a classical architectural setting. King Solomon sits upon his throne to the left, presiding over the dispute between the two women. The central figure kneels in supplication, while the other stands, gesturing towards the infant placed on the ground. The foreground is dominated by a soldier, whose muscular form and contrapposto stance reflect the influence of Italian art on Dutch painters of the sixteenth century.
Blocklandt employs pen and brown ink to define the contours of the figures, while grey wash provides volume and shadow. The architectural background, featuring a curved colonnade, creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye toward the centre of the scene. The artist uses a fluid, calligraphic line to capture the dramatic tension of the moment. The figures exhibit the elongated proportions and expressive gestures characteristic of the Mannerist style. This work serves as an example of the preparatory studies produced by Blocklandt, who was known for his religious and mythological paintings. The drawing captures the narrative clarity required for such a complex scene, balancing the emotional weight of the mothers with the authoritative presence of the king. The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the sequence of events, from the king's decree to the reaction of the claimants. The use of wash allows for subtle transitions in light, which helps to separate the foreground figures from the background architecture. This piece provides insight into the technical methods of a Dutch master working during a period of significant stylistic transition.
