Apollo, seated on the right with his lyre, gestures towards the heavens, while Marsyas sits on the left with his pan pipes. King Midas stands centrally, wearing his crown, caught in the act of delivering his fateful verdict.

The composition reflects the artist's interest in the idealised natural world. The figures occupy the foreground, arranged in a clear, balanced manner that draws from the influence of Annibale Carracci. Behind them, the scene opens into a wide, airy view of a mountainous region. A waterfall cascades down the rocks, and a small town sits nestled on the hillside, demonstrating the artist's skill in integrating human narrative with the surrounding environment.
