A symbolic work by Paul Sérusier, featuring figures in a forest rendered with bold, non-naturalistic colours and flat, decorative forms.
Paul Sérusier, a central figure of the Nabis group, painted The Incantation (The Holy Wood) in 1891. This work reflects the group's interest in decorative surfaces, non-naturalistic colour, and spiritual themes. The composition features a group of women in a forest, their forms simplified and flattened against a backdrop of vertical tree trunks. The palette is striking, dominated by saturated ochres, deep reds, and acid greens, which move away from the observational techniques of Impressionism.
The figures appear engaged in a ritualistic act, their gestures deliberate and quiet. Sérusier uses these bold colours to evoke a sense of mystery rather than to describe the physical reality of the woods. The verticality of the trees creates a rhythmic structure, guiding the eye across the canvas while maintaining a sense of two-dimensional design. This approach to painting, often called cloisonnism, relies on flat areas of colour enclosed by dark outlines, a technique influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the work of Paul Gauguin.
Sérusier was deeply involved in the theoretical discussions of the Nabis, who sought to bridge the gap between fine art and decorative arts. This painting demonstrates their belief that a work of art should express an idea or emotion through the arrangement of lines and colours. The scene is not a literal depiction of a forest but a constructed space, intended to suggest a world beyond the visible. The figures, dressed in simple, dark garments, contrast with the bright, almost unnatural hues of the environment, adding to the sense of an otherworldly event. This piece remains a clear example of the shift towards abstraction and symbolic representation that defined the late nineteenth-century French avant-garde.
