A detailed botanical study by Yuan Dynasty master Wang Yuan, featuring a collection of flowers rendered with precise ink and colour on silk.
Wang Yuan, a painter active during the Yuan Dynasty, is recognised for his mastery of the bird-and-flower genre. This work, The Hundred Flowers, demonstrates the meticulous observation characteristic of his approach to botanical subjects. The composition features a variety of flora, including wisteria, narcissus, and camellia, arranged across a neutral, aged silk background. Each plant is rendered with precise brushwork, capturing the specific structure of petals, leaves, and stems.
The artist employs a technique that balances scientific accuracy with the aesthetic conventions of the period. The muted colour palette, dominated by soft ochres, faded purples, and muted greens, allows the viewer to focus on the individual characteristics of each specimen. Unlike later, more decorative floral arrangements, this piece maintains a sense of space between the subjects, treating each plant as a distinct study. The ink lines are fine and controlled, providing definition without overwhelming the delicate washes of colour applied to the silk.
Wang Yuan was known for his ability to combine the traditional ink-wash methods of the literati with a more descriptive, realistic style. This work reflects that synthesis. The absence of a complex background or environmental context directs attention entirely to the botanical forms. The silk support has aged over the centuries, resulting in a warm, golden-brown tone that unifies the composition. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink and pigment, preserving the quiet observation of the natural world that defines Wang Yuan's contribution to Chinese art history.
